CO2 dissolves in the water partly as carbonic acid. CO2 can therefore be used to adjust the pH value (acidity) of the aquarium water to optimum, near-natural values for fish and plants.

Aquarium fish in particular love slightly acidic water. It has a positive effect on the very sensitive fish skin. Trace elements that are important for plants and fish are better absorbed. Unsightly limescale deposits on the plant leaves (biogenic decalcification) are avoided. Good plant growth = no algae. In aquariums with well-growing aquatic plants, annoying algae have practically no chance. Algae-promoting nutrients such as phosphates and nitrates are immediately absorbed by the plants.

However, if CO2 is missing, plant growth comes to a standstill. Excess nutrients are no longer consumed quickly enough. Now the algae have their chance, as they can cope with even the smallest amounts of CO2.

Good planting and regular CO2 fertilization are therefore among the most important preventive measures against algae.
