Practical water tests for the aquarium

Water tests for checking the water in the aquarium

Regularly checking the water values in an aquarium is a fundamental part of any aquarium and is crucial to the health and well-being of the aquarium inhabitants, including aquarium plants.

A sudden death of the aquarium inhabitants or deficiency symptoms in aquarium plants can be successfully avoided at an early stage thanks to regular water tests, as appropriate countermeasures can be taken.

For you as an aquarist, it is important to achieve optimum water values, depending on the fish population in the aquarium and their requirements of the aquarium water, so that an optimum habitat can develop for the aquarium inhabitants.

Water care products work by influencing and optimising the water to achieve an optimum value. It is therefore important to know the water values in the aquarium and to check them regularly with the help of so-called water tests in order to be able to take appropriate measures to optimise the water quality if necessary, because not all water is the same.

The most important water values to consider in a freshwater aquarium are temperature, conductivity (S/m or µS/cm), carbonate hardness (KH/°dKH), acidity (pH) and total hardness (GH/°dGH) on the one hand, and nitrite (NO2), nitrate (NO3), phosphate (PO4) and silicate (SiO2), iron (Fe), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg) as well as carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen (O2) on the other.

Measuring methods in the aquarium

There are many different measurement methods that can be used to measure and analyse water values. The water temperature is measured using a familiar thermometer. In addition to analogue thermometers for measuring water temperature, there are also digital thermometers for measuring temperature. There are also a variety of different digital water measuring devices for measuring conductivity or the pH value as well as so-called test strip and drop tests for measuring these and other water parameters.

The best-known method is probably measurement with a test strip. The test strip is held briefly in the aquarium and after a short time the colour changes at the measuring points on the test strip so that you only have to read off the values. This method of measuring water values gives you as an aquarist a good idea of the water value in your aquarium.

For a more precise measurement of the water values, we recommend using the so-called drop test. By taking a water sample from the aquarium and mixing it with certain reagents, each individual water value can be determined precisely. A colour chart is then used to check the value of the sample fluid taken and appropriate water care products can be used to counteract this.

Regular monitoring of the water values

As an aquarist, regular monitoring and care of the aquarium water is of crucial importance for the health and well-being of the plants and animals in your aquarium. With the help of various water test products, you as an aquarium owner are optimally supported in this task.
